Defining Success

Until you know what the target is, how will you aim for it?

All the motivation in the world will do you little good if you lack something to focus your energies on, so my question to you is, how do you define success? What is it you focus on?

There are a couple ways to define success for yourself.

One of the most popular is to look to someone who is already doing what you want to be doing, and emulate what they did to get where they are. The problem with this approach is not understanding the winding nature of life’s path. When you look back, it may seem like Point A led to Point B which led to Success C. Life, however, is more a jumble of infinite possibilities laid out in front of you, and who knows where each choice will lead you. Remember that even if we roll back time, and you make the same beginning choices, chaos theory will rear it’s ugly head, and you will probably wind up somewhere completely different.

It’s ok to look to others to help define success, but get there on your own terms.

Another way to define success is to declare wherever you are currently as success! That’s akin to shooting the arrow, and then moving the target to wherever it lands. The problem with this approach is it encourages complacency.

It is ok to accept where you are, and it is even good to appreciate where you are in life, but the moment you stop reaching and growing is the moment you die. Understand where you are is not where you are going to be.

So, what approach to success is useful? The way I define success is a whole hearted devotion to your principles. Maintain integrity, take chances, and always stay true to what you know is right. If you can do that, you will be successful, no matter where life takes you.

Aim high!
