Use Systems

Maximize Your Time With Systems

I’m just as busy as the next person. With immediate deadlines and no end in sight, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with our work and lives. This makes for a perfect opportunity to excuse yourself from doing what you know you should be doing to get healthy.

Eat poorly, drink crap, stay on the couch (I’ve had a rough day, I deserve it). The list is as long as you want to make it.

One of the best ways I’ve found to short-circuit those unproductive patterns is to set up a routine. Once it becomes second nature, you’ll automatically do the things you know you should be doing.

I wake up, do my body weight exercise of the day, practice kung fu, and then drink my protein shake.

This is Jeeves. I built him myself, and he's a great training partner.

Even when I have a 16 hour travel day ahead of me, I stick to my system. I know it works, it makes me feel better, and I stay in my groove. I know if I take a day or two off (which I have) I know it’s much more difficult for me to get back into it. It’s easier and easier for me to excuse my lack of effort.

Use a system, and you won’t have to use excuses.
