Find Joy In Your Work

What if your job needed you to stay awake for 40 hours straight? Would you do it?

What if it wasn’t even your job, and for a friend’s job? Would you do it?

A couple weeks ago, that’s exactly what happened. A personal and showbiz friend was going to miss a flight from Chicago to Boston due to airline interruptions, which meant he was going to miss his show in Boston the next day.

As soon as he got the alert at 11pm that the next morning’s flight was down, I looked at the map and saw it was a 17 hour drive, and the show was in 19 hours.

I looked at him and said, “If we leave right now we can make it. Let’s do this!”

Without a moment’s hesitation, he says, “OK. Let’s go!”

We picked up our travel bags from our respective apartments, and we were on our way.

When I woke up that morning, I had no clue I’d be going on a 17 hour car trip that evening. Certainly not starting at midnight.

But that’s what you do when you’re living your passion. I drove through the night so my buddy could sleep and be ready for the show. When he woke up and took over driving, I didn’t want to be a bad copilot and sleep the whole way, so I stayed up.

We got to the venue with an hour to set up, and everything went off without a hitch.

When I finally got to sleep, I did the math and figured out I’d been awake for 40 hours straight with no nap.

The weird part? It wasn’t even difficult. It was what needed to happen, so that’s what I did.

That’s the power of finding something you can be passionate about, and love doing.

That’s what it means to be SoMotivated.
